Who We Are

The James L. Goodwin Conservation Center is sustained through a public/private partnership between the Connecticut Department of Energy & Environmental Protection (CT DEEP) and the Connecticut Forest & Park Association (CFPA). It serves as a conservation education field site in eastern Connecticut with a mission to provide forestry, wildlife, and general conservation education to youth and adults. The Goodwin Conservation Center and James L. Goodwin State Forest were gifts to the people of Connecticut from James L. Goodwin, one of America’s first professional foresters and a long-time CFPA Board Member.  The James L. Goodwin State Forest is managed by the CT DEEP Division of Forestry.

The Friends of Goodwin Forest (FGF) is a volunteer-based organization, working in cooperation with center staff and through the fiscal sponsorship of CFPA (a membership-based, private non-profit 501c3 organization.)  In partnership with CFPA, the Friends support the Center and Goodwin State Forest by volunteering on trails and in gardens as well as supporting educational programs.  We also bring awareness of the Forest to state officials and the public as well as raise funds to support our mission. Learn more about the FGF at https://www.friendsofgoodwinforest.org

What We Do

The Goodwin Forest Conservation Center and the Friends of Goodwin Forest both welcome volunteers. Projects involving volunteers include trail maintenance and monitoring, assisting with or leading educational programs, and engaging with the Richard D. Haley Native Wildlife Garden.
