Join CFPA's Trails Director for a hands-on day of sidehilling on the Tunxis Trail. Sidehilling or "benching" is a method of building a level trail surface that traverses a steep hillside. We will demonstrate best practices and techniques and improve existing trail sections. If time allows, we will also construct a section of new trail. Work will include lots of dirt moving and digging, root removal and levelling with handtools.
All tools are provided. All skills welcome. Come prepared to learn, get dirty and have fun. We will be working on steep terrain, and may be hiking more than one mile each way over the course of the work party.
We will meet at the Sessions Woods WMA parking lot near the gazebo at 9:00 am. Directions to parking are here: Google Maps Link. We will carpool a few miles further north by car to roadside parking on Rt 69.
Please bring LOTS of water (even more than you think you'll need), snacks, bug spray, bug net, sunblock, lunch, rain gear, work gloves, backpack to carry your gear, and any personal items you need to spend a few hours in the woods. Be sure to wear long pants & sturdy closed-toe shoes, long sleeves are recommended. There is always the risk of poison ivy and ticks. No pets please.
Thanks for your support of CFPA and the Blue-Blazed Hiking Trails!
